World’s oldest man turns 113.

The world’s oldest man turned 113 on Thursday and the Holocaust survivor living in Israel readied for the Bar Mitzvah he was denied a century ago, his family said.
Yisrael Kristal, an observant Jew from Zarnow in what is now Poland and currently living in the port city of Haifa, was born on September 15, 1903, three months before the Wright brothers’ first successful powered airplane flight.
Guinness World Records in March recognised him as the world’s oldest man.
While he turned 113 on Thursday under the Gregorian calendar, his family will celebrate the birthday at the end of September according to the Hebrew calendar, his daughter Shula Koperstoch told AFP.
The festivities will include a Bar Mitzvah that will come 100 years late.
The Bar Mitzvah is one of the most important ceremonies in the life of a Jew.
Usually marked at 13 for boys and 12 or 13 for girls — a Bat Mitzvah in that case — it marks the transition into someone responsible for their actions.
Kristal was unable to celebrate his Bar Mitzvah in 1916 because his mother had died three months earlier and his father was a soldier in the Russian army at the time of World War I.
“My father is religious and has prayed every morning for 100 years, but he has never had his Bar Mitzvah,” his daughter said.
Around 100 family members will attend, with the date and location being kept secret to avoid Kristal having to contend with a crush of journalists, she said.
Asked about his health, Koperstoch said only: “He is ageing.”
After World War I, Kristal moved to Lodz where he worked in the family confectionary factory, married and had two children.
But his life was disrupted when the Jewish quarter of the city became a ghetto under Nazi occupation during World War II and Kristal was sent to the infamous Nazi death camp Auschwitz-Birkenau.
Around 1.1 million people, most of them European Jews, perished in the camp between 1940 and 1945 before it was liberated by Soviet forces.
His wife and two children died but Kristal survived, weighing just 37 kilos (81 pounds) at the end of the war.
He then moved to Israel, where he has lived for over six decades. He re-married, had a son and opened a sweet shop.
He is four years younger than the world’s oldest woman, Emma Morano, an Italian who turns 117 in November — meaning she was born in the 19th century.
The previous oldest man, Yasutaro Koide of Japan, died in January at the age of 112.
Jeanne Louise Calment, who died in 1997, was the oldest verified person ever — passing away in France aged 122 years and 164 days.

South Africa bans anti-gay US pastor.

South Africa on Tuesday banned a Holocaust-denying, anti-gay American pastor from entering the country, after an outcry from rights groups over his characterisation of gays as “sodomites” and “paedophiles”.
Steven Anderson, who in 2009 infamously prayed for US President Barack Obama’s death, had planned a “soul-winning” visit to South Africa at the weekend.
But Home Affairs Minister Malusi Gigaba declared the Christian preacher a “prohibited person” following objections over his “hate speech”.
“Steven Anderson and members or associates of his church are prohibited from entering the Republic of South Africa,” Gigaba said at a press conference in Cape Town.
“We have a duty to prevent harm and hatred, in all forms, against LGBTI (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transsexual and intersex) as against any other person in a democratic state,” the minister said.
Anderson has frequently courted controversy through his Arizona-based Faithful Word Baptist Church, which preaches a literal reading of the Bible.
A Holocaust denier, he prayed for the death of US President Barack Obama in 2009 over his pro-choice stance on abortion, and called the victims of the November 2015 attack on the Bataclan nightclub in Paris “devil worshipers”.
After the deadly shooting at a gay nightclub in Orlando earlier this year, he said “there’s 50 less paedophiles in this world”.
And in an interview with a Cape Town radio station earlier Tuesday, Anderson called Nobel Peace Prize winner and former Anglican archbishop Desmond Tutu — a vocal supporter of the LGBTI community and whose daughter is lesbian — a “pervert… who goes around in a pink dress”.
An online petition against the planned visit to South Africa garnered over 60,000 signatures.
Responding to his ban in a Facebook post, Anderson said, “I feel sorry for people who live in South Africa.”
He said a planned visit to neighbouring Botswana, where homosexual acts are illegal, was still scheduled to go ahead.
Americans do not require visas to travel to South Africa, but Gigaba on   Tuesday also revoked Anderson’s visa exemption status.
“If we find him at any of our ports of entry, we will detain and deport him,” said Gigaba.
“We don’t want him in this country.”
South Africa is one of the few countries in Africa that recognises gay rights and the only one that allows same-sex marriages.

Jude Ndukwe: Buhari’s proposed emergency powers and how not to kill a nation.

images (6)
It is a season of the absurd. Nigeria is haemorrhaging uncontrollably, left for too long to bleed and now in near-comatose situation. Truly, she is in dire need of urgent attention as she suffers from economic asphyxiation on the treatment table while she is abandoned to writhe in avoidable pain. Suddenly, it seems her doctors are just realizing exactly how bad the situation is and they are now very desperate to do everything to save her, or so it seems, from total shut-down.

Gbenga Daniel’s son starts Foundation for disabled people.

debola
The son of the former Governor of Ogun State and Chairman Kresta Laurel Limited, Otunba Gbenga Daniel, Adebola Daniel has begun a foundation to press for equity and fairness to the physically challenged individuals in Nigeria.
In a statement, Mr. Adebola reiterated the need to end discrimination against people living with disabilities in the country.
“I was born into a very comfortable home, with both amazing parents and without a disability.
“However, when I turned 5, I was diagnosed with paraplegia- a rare condition with no medical clarity. I became confined to a wheelchair. Growing up in Nigeria, I unconsciously associated disability to poverty and crime due to amputated beggars on the streets mostly as a result of Sharia Law practiced in the North. This was general opinion of most Nigerians in my social circle as a child.
“Having myself become physically challenged, I was exposed to the stigma and assumptions that came with being ‘disabled’.
“All of a sudden, I was looked at with pity, with judgement and sometimes with resentment by my fellow countrymen.
“As I became an adult, I began to realise that the onus was on me to make something of myself and create my life and future the way I envision it. My future was, and would always be in my own hands.”
Debola, who has a Masters in Mechanical Engineering from University College London is an inspirational speaker with TEDx Talk and founder of the African Youth Initiative.
According to him, Nigeria is one of the most unjust society for people living with disabilities, hence the need to create a movement to seek for not just equity but challenge the mindset of the average Nigerian.
“I see a lack of integration and it saddens me knowing that there is a young disabled Nigerian out there that has the capability to achieve what I have achieved and even surpass me but regrettably, they were not being given the adequate support from government and the society.
“It is unacceptable that most schools in Nigeria are inaccessible. It is unacceptable that roadside pavements are not fit for wheelchairs. It is unacceptable that Shell and other multinationals adhere to strict disability codes in the US and UK but are unable to carry this same principles to Nigeria.” He said.
According to him, the Debola Daniel Foundation “will not be a charity organization that will give out wheelchairs and crutches to the less privileged, rather will challenge government to think of disabilities when formulating policies especially in Education, Employment, Entrepreneurism and Development.
“At the moment, the foundation is working on a social media campaign with information, statistics and policies we support under the hashtag #DisabledNotUnable.” ‎
“A second segment titled #MyStory is being developed too, where the foundation celebrates disabled citizens who have decided that disability is not the end but just a different path. These people have decided to live life rather than be idle.” The statement read.

Police bans mass wedding in Kano.

mass wedding
The Kano State Police Command has banned a mass wedding organised by a group loyal to former Governor Rabiu Kwankwaso.
A statement signed by the command’s Public Relations Officer, DSP Magaji Majiya explained that the action was taken because the wedding coincided with the state government’s planned empowerment programme event slated for August 20.
“The police has banned the two ceremonies indefinitely as security intelligence available at our disposal revealed that some disgruntled elements are preparing to use the occasions to cause havoc in the state.
“Our prime responsibility is to ensure peace, tranquillity, protection of lives and property as well as maintenance of law and order,’’ the statement said.
The statement added that the Commissioner of Police would invite the organisers of the two events for a meeting with a view to resolving the issues.

Pastor paid me to fake miracles – South African woman reveals.

South African1
The 38-year-old woman recently narrated to one of the country’s daily papers, claiming that the self-acclaimed man of God pays an equivalent of about K30 thousand a week to a team of actors to stage being healed.
Margaret said, “My conscience has been pricking me for about 3 months now and I am terrified that God might punish me.
“I was told I could get a job at a church in Pretoria and would be paid R500 the same day. I didn’t know what kind of job it was. I was told I must act in a holy way and pretend I was healed. I had to testify to living a horrible life before.
“I knew what I was doing was wrong but I couldn’t resist the R500 money promised. This is because I needed the money to feed my 3 children and I couldn’t turn down the offer so I did what they told me.
“And that was how I began. I lied to people and agreed to everything the pastor asked me. I said I was unemployed but I had recently got a job through God’s power after the pastor prayed for me. I have not had a job for the past 4 years.
“My only job was telling lies recently at church in Pretoria Showground.                                                                          Later, the church stopped paying me on time because it now has a lot of people lying and giving false testimonies for the prophet and then at the end, there is not enough money to pay all of us.
South African2
“The pastor kept promising he will pay me. Sometimes, he gives me R300 and at times nothing at all. I am so ashamed.”
An unnamed leader of the church, when interviewed by the newspaper, said he did not know Margaret.
He denied that the church board or senior pastor paid people to testify.
He said, “If you want to speak with Shepherd Bushiri for information, you need to make an appointment to come to the office or church service to see how the man of God is changing lives.
“I don’t know you and I am not prepared to talk to you any longer.”

People making money out of our grief – Chibok parents.

Some parents of the missing Chibok girls have alleged that  some people have been making money out of them.
This disclosure is coming against the backdrop of complaints by parents that their advocates were not being accountable to those of them still living in Chibok and its surrounding villages.
The parents,  who spoke to news correspondent on  the telephone on Monday,  also disclosed that they had  yet to receive the N30m donations made by Aisha, wife of President Muhammadu Buhari.
The President’s wife had three weeks ago presented a cheque of N55m  to the parents of the missing Chibok schoolgirls and those of the Buni Yadi School boys.
Dolapo,  wife of the Vice-President Yemi  Osinbajo,  collected the cheque of N30m  on behalf of  their  parents while  the Minister of State Foreign Affairs, Khadijat Bukar, received the cheque of N25m meant for the parents of the Buni Yadi boys.
However,  Yana Galla,  the chairperson of the association of the  parents of the missing Chibok schoolgirls living in Chibok and its surrounding villages,  dispelled the rumours  that the monies had been shared to them.
Galla said  the money was  still  with the aides to  the President’s wife.
It was learnt that there are still concerns of mistrust about how the Chibok parents perceived the activities of some advocates and officials.
Ladi Lawan Zannah and some of the parents of the missing girls,  while speaking on the awaited donations,  said many people had turned their grief into a money-making venture and feeding fat on it.
She said apart from the N100,000 assistance they received from the Borno State Government in August of 2015, the last assistance they got since then was N5,000,  which they received from MTN Foundation during the second year anniversary of the abductions of the girls, this year.
“We only hear that something has been given and we have been waiting endlessly for it to get to us. Will it come today or the next day? This has always been the case, whereas the assistance may never get to us,” she said.
On the N30m donations by Aisha Buhari, Ladi  said, “ The only thing we have ever got was two  pairs of wrapper and N5,000 which accompanied it.
“If  the money was  released,  it hasn’t reached us. The N5,000 I talked about with the wrapper was given to us during the second anniversary prayers of our missing daughter’s.”
Ayama Pogu a retired Assistant Superintendent of Police, who complained bitterly, asked  the government to rethink its engagement with all of those claiming to be representing them.
He added that the Chibok parents were being shortchanged.
He said the assistance giving to the Chibok parents often ended  up in the wrong hands, adding that he had lost confidence in all the officials who had  been representing  them.
He said, “Some people have been making money out of our grief. Never at anytime has any of these officials who have gone to meet with the government on our behalf, either come back to brief us or revealed to us the outcome of their meeting.”

Our parents are now together- Keshi Jnr.

keshi-wife

The family of the late Stephen Keshi has responded to the amazing outpouring of grief that followed his surprising death early last week.
Speaking from Atlanta Georgia, Stephen Keshi Junior spoke on behalf of the family. “We’re still mourning our father, we’re still shocked and confused. Words can’t describe our feelings right now, but we want to remain joyful, remain happy, because he was a joyful and happy person. For us what helps is our parents are together now; they were together on earth for 33 years. It soothes us that they are together in heaven,” he said. “He was our loving father, widower, grandfather, brother, friend, pioneer, mentor and hero. Our father was a joyful person, he hated sadness with a passion. We are grateful for all the love, support and condolence from everyone on the loss of such an iconic African. “We appreciate all the phone calls, texts, messages and posts on social media. It is not easy to lose both parents within a 6-month period. It is important to know that you have been there for us before and will be there for us going forward.
“Stephen Keshi was a just man, who believed and championed the cause of every teammate when he played the game and every player when he was a coach. He served his nation and people with pride and joy. He always had a smile on his face whenever he did it. “ “His illustrious football career took him outside of Nigeria to Ivory Coast first, before he made the trip to Europe; a trip footballers make today and he was one of the first to embark on such journey. Our father was a man of the people; he welcomed everyone with open arms as a player and even more as a manager when he was with Togo, Mali and most recently the Super Eagles of Nigeria. “As we mourn the loss of a great man, we want everyone to join us in celebrating his remarkable life and even though it was taken away from us quicker than expected, we hope his life serves as a great example, his experience and how he fought for what was right is seen by younger generations as something to aspire to. “ “We will keep you updated on where and when the wake keeping in California and Georgia will be as well as information about the burial in Nigeria. Let us celebrate and honour Stephen Keshi, celebrate his example to serve his country, honour his accomplishments as a player, father and coach, remember the smile and energetic laughter he had that brightened every room he walked into. “ Stephen Okechukwu Keshi, was the former captain of the Super Eagles of Nigeria, who led Nigeria to it’s debut FIFA World Cup in 1994 and was the second man to win the Africa Cup of Nations as a player and manager. He died in Benin on Wednesday. He was 54.

Islamic cleric hypnotized, turned me into sex slave for 5 months – 24-year-old woman.

Relax abortion laws for Boko Haram victims - UN urges FG
A certain woman identified only as Simbiat, has narrated her ordeal in the hands of an Islamic cleric, Olalekan Anifowoshe, aka Alfa in Lagos state.
Simbiat, 24, is a returnee from Dubai, United Arab Emirates, who had been in the Alfa’s custody, for five months.
According to reports, Anifowoshe, 42, had abducted Simbiat from the Murtala Muhammed Airport in Ikeja, Lagos State on her arrival in the country and had kept her in his rented apartment in the Atan-Ota area of the state and allegedly had sex with her at will during the period.
When asked how she knew the Alfa, Simbiat said she and the suspect were neighbours in the Surulere area of the state where the suspect’s wife and three children also resided.
She said she had consulted him in 2013 for help over a spiritual attack before travelling to Dubai.
She said, “Sometime in 2013, I had a dream that a man made love to me. A friend introduced me to Alfa and he gave me a piece of white cloth with Arabic inscriptions to cover my body whenever I wanted to sleep, which I used. Some months later, I travelled to Dubai.
“On January 11, he called me on the telephone to come home. It was like a spell. I packed my things and arrived in Lagos the following day without telling my parents.
“He picked me at the airport and took me to his apartment in the Aboru area. After some time, he relocated me to Atan-Ota, where he was eventually arrested. He beat me anyhow and slept with me" she added.
Luck came her way after a Good Samaritan, who saw her sometime in May, was said to have informed her family and the case was reported at the Onipanu Police Division, leading to Alfa’s arrest.
She continued, “Sometime in May, Alfa took me to a river for a ritual. While he left me to do something inside the bush, I saw someone I knew. The person informed my father that I was already in Nigeria, but in captivity.
“My father was shocked because he thought I was in Dubai.”
Simbiat, who sold food in Dubai, alleged that Alfa also collected her jewellery valued at N250,000 and a cash sum of about N480,000.
At the station, the suspect allegedly owned up to the allegations.
He, however, promised to refund the money to his victim in his statement to the police.
He said apart from prayers, he also used traditional means to help solve his clients’ problems.
He said, “I am married with three children. The woman and I knew each other in Surulere, where my family members reside.
“As an Islamic cleric, I help people facing problems with prayers and it works. That was how I got to know Simbiat.
“It is true I cast a spell on her to come back to Nigeria. She was living with me and I slept with her occasionally. I only borrowed the money from her, I will refund it.”
Confirming the incident, the Ogun State Police Command Public Relations Officer, PRO, DSP Muyiwa Adejobi, said the suspect had been charged to court.
Adejobi said, “Case confirmed. The suspect has been charged to court after a thorough investigation.

“The command has no tolerance for such inhuman case and we will always fish out the perpetrators,” the PRO added.
