Sunderland appoint David Moyes as new coach.

DavidMoyes
Ex Everton, Manchester United and Real Sociedad boss, David Moyes has been appointed as the new manager of Sunderland, following the departure of Sam Allardyce who was earlier announced as England senior national team coach.
The former Everton handler has penned a four-year contract at the Stadium of Light.
He left the Premier League after being sacked by Manchester United in April 2014.
Club chairman, Ellis Short said, “We are absolutely delighted to welcome David Moyes to Sunderland, who was by far and away our first choice.
“He is a man whose football pedigree speaks for itself and is someone I have long admired. I have spoken with him on many occasions and I have always been hugely impressed.
“He was my number one managerial target for the last five appointments, but his desire to honour existing contracts meant we were not able to bring him to Sunderland previously. To be able to finally welcome him as our manager is fantastic news for the club.
“The fact that David has committed to a four-year deal is a clear demonstration of his belief in what he can achieve here.
“It is our aim to become a better, stronger and more stable football club and with a manager of David’s calibre and experience at the helm, we have a fantastic opportunity to begin looking upwards, rather than downwards every season”.
Moyes said via his twitter handle, “I am delighted to have joined Sunderland. I am relishing the challenge and excited by the opportunity.”
“I have taken over a big British club, with a great support and I’m looking forward to working in the Premier League again.
“I look forward to continuing the good work done by Sam.”

Mourinho, others react as FA names Allardyce new England manager.

Mourinho's first United prezzer July2016
The Football Association (FA), the English football governing body, on Friday named Sunderland AFC manager Sam Allardyce as the new England manager, handing him an initial two-year contract.
The 61-year-old signed an initial two-year deal after compensation was agreed with Sunderland, whom he steered to Premier League safety last season.
He succeeds Roy Hodgson, who quit after England were knocked out of Euro 2016 in the last 16 by Iceland.
Allardyce, whose first game in charge will be a friendly at Wembley on Sept. 1 against as yet unnamed opponents, said he was “honoured’’ to be given the job.
“It is no secret that this is the role I have always wanted. For me, it is absolutely the best job in English football.
“I will do everything I can to help England do well and give our nation the success our fans deserve. Above all, we have to make the people and the whole country proud,’’ he added.
FA chief executive Martin Glenn, while speaking on the development, said: “His excellent managerial credentials, including his ability to realise the potential of players and teams, develop a strong team ethos and embrace modern methods that enhance performance, made him the outstanding
choice.
“We could not help but be energised by his personal perspective on England’s future.’’
A statement on the FA’s website said Allardyce’s primary target is qualification for the 2018 World Cup finals in Russia.
“But he is also charged with helping technical director Dan Ashworth integrate and strengthen the FA’s elite performance and coaching programme across the England senior and development teams at St George’s Park,’’ it said.
Allardyce’s first competitive match will be in Slovakia on Sept. 4 as England begin their qualifying campaign for the 2018 World Cup.
He leaves Sunderland after nine months and the Black Cats are now looking for their ninth manager in eight years.
A statement from the club read: “The focus of everyone at Sunderland AFC is on moving forward quickly and decisively, with the appointment of the club’s new manager to be confirmed at the earliest opportunity.’’
Allardyce, a former manager at Bolton Wanderers, Newcastle United, Blackburn Rovers and West Ham United, has thus become the 14th permanent England manager.
He has never won a major trophy but did win promotion to the Premier League with Bolton, Newcastle and West Ham.
Allardyce has been endorsed by his fellow managers, including Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho, former England manager Sven Goran-Eriksson and ex-Tottenham Spurs manager Harry Redknapp.
Mourinho said Allardyce was “more than ready’’ to lead the national side, while Redknapp said he would bring “a Premier League style and pace’’ to the national side.
Former FA director David Davies said his appointment was a challenge for English football.
“This is the person the League Managers’ Association probably would have wanted.
“Now will the clubs actually go out of their way to help the national team because they’ve got the person they wanted – one of their own?’’
Allardyce was first interviewed for the England job following Eriksson’s departure after the 2006 World Cup in Germany, but Steve McClaren was appointed.
Bournemouth’s Eddie Howe and USA manager Jurgen Klinsmann were reported as potential candidates, but it is not known how many other interviews were conducted.

Le Guen: NFF has disgraced Nigeria – Onigbinde.

Paul LeGuen 690450
Former coach of the Super Eagles, Adegboye Onigbinde, has blasted officials of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), over the botched appointed of Paul Le Guen as coach of the national team.
The Executive Committee of the NFF, named Le Guen as Sunday Oliseh’s replacement. But in a dramatic turn of events, the Frenchman rejected the role and claimed he never applied for the job, neither was he interested in coaching the former African champions.
Onigbinde, who is a former FIFA/CAF Technical Advisor, says heads should have rolled in the Glass House.
“A portion of FIFA rules talks about a game being brought into disrepute,” Onigbinde told Completesportsnigeria.com.
“The NFF by that singular act of shabbily handling the purported appointment and or recommendation of Le Guen and even making it a public discourse, to me, have brought Nigeria into disrepute and should have resigned or be sacked were it to be in other climes.
“That a football federation interviewed a coach on Skype and announced to the world he has been recommended for appointment, only for the coach to say no, I don’t want your job, keep it to yourself.
“What a shame, what an embarrassment.”

La Liga president reveals Barcelona could play friendlies in Nigeria.

LMC-La-liga-pix
The president of Spanish La Liga, Javier Tebas, has hinted that Barcelona could play friendly matches in Nigeria, as a result of the partnership between La Liga and the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL).
Tebas was speaking at a press conference, organized to open the La Liga office inside the Corporate Headquarters of the League Management Company in Abuja.
“We are here today to open a La Liga Office in Nigeria in furtherance of that understanding,” Tebas said.
“We have made good progress in the three months of the understanding signed between us and Nigeria football league and in a few weeks, an All-Star team from Nigeria will tour LaLiga and we are taking care of the travel and accommodation of 40 members of the team.
“During this tour, the team will play three matches in Spain and will be watched by the directors of top LaLiga clubs who make decisions and this may result in some Nigeria League players being invited to the clubs.
“We also will be sending experts to interact with NPFL Club Managers and share knowledge and also send coaches to work at the grassroot academies for development of youth football.
“La Liga clubs would also visit Nigeria to play friendly matches…yes, Barcelona can come to Nigeria and that will mean that the NPFL is a big league.
“I am sure that by the time the first five years of the partnership ends, LaLiga and NPFL will be bigger.”

NFF debunks Pinnick impeachment rumours.

pinnick1

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) board, has denied stories that claimed that its president, Amaju Pinnick, was close to being impeached at the board’s meeting on Wednesday.
According to reports, Pinnick narrowly escaped being impeached by his fellow executive committee members, after the botched appointed of Paul Le Guen as the new coach of the Super Eagles.
During the committee’s meeting in Abuja, tempers flared and board members threatened to impeach Pinnick, while also demanding to know the full details of the sponsorship deal he secured to cover the salaries of the new coach.
Chairman of the NFF Media and Publicity Committee, Hon. Suleiman Yahaya-Kwande, has however rubbished such stores.
He said: “The NFF has never taken up issue with anyone or any organization for criticizing its work or disagreeing with its policies and decisions. However, outright fabrication of what someone expected or assumed to have transpired at a meeting or forum is unprofessional and condemnable.
“At no time during the meeting did any member mention the word ‘impeachment.’
“At all times, we welcome criticisms, because we don’t know it all and we have never pretended to do so. The communiqué was clear on what matters were deliberated upon at the meeting. We had earlier explained what transpired with regards to the Paul Le Guen issue. He was recommended but we failed to agree terms; it happens every now and again all over the world. You want to employ someone but you fail to reach agreement on terms and conditions of service and the deal is off.”

We did not ask athletes to buy their tickets to Olympics – Dalung.

Solomon-Dalung
The Minister of Youths and Sports, Barrister Solomon Dalung, has expressed regrets over an ’embarrassing letter’ directing Nigerian athletes preparing for the Olympic Games in Brazil to source funds by themselves to pay for air tickets.
Dalung said the letter was not dispatched by the ministry and vowed to fish out the writer.
The minister made the claim in a statement signed by his media aide, Nneka Anibeze, which was posted on his Facebook wall.
Dalung noted that the Director, High Performance, Angie Taylor has been given the task of arranging for the flights and movement of the foreign based athletes to and from Rio.
He said, “We did not write any mail asking athletes to pay their way to Rio. As the overseers of sports in the country, it is our duty to take care of all our athletes. The letter did not come from us and we will investigate the writer of that letter.
“It does not represent our stand concerning the movement of athletes to Rio and the writer or anybody asking athletes to buy their tickets to Rio will be investigated. We ask Nigerians and athletes in particular to disregard the mail.”
He, however, tasked athletes to focus on their build-up to the Rio games.

NFF in crisis because there’s more money in football than oil industry – Dalung.

Solomon-Dalung
Nigeria’s Minister of Sport and Youth Development, Solomon Dalung, has claimed that the current crisis in the football house, is because “there’s more money there than in the oil industry”.
The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), has been embroiled in a leadership tussle for the last two years, after elections into the executive committee.
Dalung says money is the root of these problems.
“There’s more cash in football than in the oil sector and there is so much selfish interests and as a result we have this crisis,” Dalung said on a Hausa interview programme, broadcast by Freedom Radio Kano on Tuesday.
“There is someone who wants to force his way as the NFF president and that is why I have had to order full police presence at the NFF secretariat, if not work will not be going on there", he said.

Victor Moses to be dropped from Nigeria’s Olympics squad.

Victor Moses 3
Victor Moses might be excluded from Nigeria’s squad to this year’s Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, as “a corrective measure”.
Moses opted out of last month’s friendly matches against Mali and Luxembourg, a decision that did not impress senior officials at the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF).
The Chelsea forward was pencilled down as one of the three over-aged players on Samson Siasia’s provisional list for the Olympics, but he could now be left out.
“It is as I said before, his withdrawal from those games (against Mali and Luxembourg) made us unhappy and it wasn’t the first time he was doing it,” a top official told AfricanFootball.com
“And now his name is on the Olympic Games list, but I’m not sure he will make it because we need to take some corrective measures for these players to understand the importance of playing for Nigeria.”

Keshi’s first son unaware of burial plans.

GS-KESHI-NSOFOR
Stephen Keshi Jnr, the first son of the late Stephen Keshi, had revealed that a date has not been announced for his father’s burial rites.
The 27-year-old who arrived at the NFF Secretariat on Wednesday, insisted that he was unaware of such plans and that nobody sought their consent.
“I just came into Nigeria on Tuesday night, and we read in the papers today that somebody has fixed a date for the burial,” he said.
“I am shocked like my sisters and my brothers. Since our father died, nobody has spoken to us about how he died, and we have not even seen his corpse. Yet, someone is fixing a date for his burial.”
Keshi Jnr however thanked the federal government, the National Assembly, the Federal Ministry of Youth and Sports, the Nigeria Football Federation, corporate organizations and individuals, for their show of concern since his father died.
He added: “I cannot thank everyone enough. We have only heard good and great words about our father since his death. I am going to Benin City now. The family will sit down and come up with a date for the funeral, but we also appreciate that he was a national figure and will harmonize our plans with that of the Government and the NFF.
“Our father was a loving family man and we will miss him greatly. Our joy is that he left a worthy legacy for Nigeria football and for his family.”

Family proposes July 28 for Keshi’s burial.

Keshi 1
The News Agency of Nigeria has reported that the family of Stephen Keshi has proposed July 28 for his burial.
The late former Super Eagles coach’s elder brother and spokesman for the family Sylvester Keshi told NAN in Illah, Delta State, on Tuesday that the family had begun preparations for the burial.
Sylvester said, “For now, we are proposing July 28 for the burial, although we are still awaiting the constitution of the burial committee being planned by the Nigeria Football Federation.
“At present, we are planning ahead for Stephen’s burial. We are still meeting, consulting and making preparations to give our son a befitting burial.
“We are making preparations for the renovation of his family house here in Illah.”
According to him, a representative of the family, Mr. Emma Ado held several meetings with the NFF and a letter was sent to the sports ministry about the burial plans for the former Nigeria captain.
Sylvester added, “Emma Ado, who was Stephen’s agent, has been liaising with the football house and letters have been dispatched in respect of the burial.
“So, I want to believe that in the comings days, we will have a burial committee to work with because it is not just a family burial, the government is involved too.”
He said the Delta and Edo governments had indicated their interest in the burial, adding that the full details of the programme would be made public as soon as the committee was constituted.
Sylvester said, “For now, the family has not received any contribution from anybody or organisation for the burial. People are just indicating their interest to be part of the burial. We are still consulting.”
He confirmed the Tunisia ’94 and South Africa 2013 Africa Cup of Nations winner would be buried in his hometown, Illah.
He said Keshi, who buried his late wife last December in Benin, had confided in his family that he should be buried in his ancestral family home in Ukpologwu Quarters in Illah community, Oshimili North Local Government Area of Delta.
“Before his death, Stephen had told his children and close family members that he should be buried in Illah when he dies. He is a son of the soil, so his wish stands,” Sylvester said.

Warner ruled out of tri-series.

David Warner has been ruled out of the rest of the One-Day International tri-series against the West Indies and South Africa in the Caribbean after fracturing his left index finger, Australia skipper Steven Smith confirmed on Monday.
Opening batsman Warner, who tormented South Africa with a fine century in Australia’s 36-run win over the Proteas in St. Kitts, on Saturday, has been the kingpin in Australia’s batting line-up on what have been difficult batting wickets in the West Indies and Smith admitted that Warner’s absence will be a blow for his team.
However, he is confident that Warner, who injured his finger in the match against South Africa, will be fit for the upcoming test series against Sri Lanka.
“I think he is out for the tri-series, but I think that that most important thing from my aspect is that he is fit for the test series, I think it is about six weeks away before the first test. I think the medical staff and Davey are confident that he will be ready for the first test,” Smith told a news conference.
“It’s always tough missing a player like Davey. He is in the form of his life at the moment and had been batting beautifully. It is obviously a big loss for us. He has played beautifully at the top of the order on some difficult wickets for batting. I think there will be a bit of an onus on the player coming in and the guys in the top four to try and get the job done. There have been some quite slow wickets in the series so far. It is about adapting and trying to get in. It might take a bit longer than usual but once you get in you need to cash in,”
Australia’s selectors have yet to decide if a replacement player will be called up to the touring squad but it is likely that Usman Khawaja will be elevated in the batting line-up to open with Aaron Finch.
Australia currently top the table on nine points, four points ahead of second-placed South Africa with the West Indies a point back.
The Windies and Australia square off in St. Kitts on Monday, June 13 and Australia legspinner Adam Zampa feels that a win against the hosts will all but guarantee Australia a place in the final.
“It’s a nice spot to be in on the ladder at the moment. Obviously coming up is a pretty important match against the West Indies. If we win that it will probably go a long way to getting into the final. We’ve been bowling pretty well as a unit. We were a bit disappointing with the bat in Guyana but that can happen on wickets like that but we have been bowling pretty well and we can take confidence from that,” said Zampa.
South Africa’s next match in the tournament is against the hosts in St. Kitts on Wednesday, June 15 and they will want to return to winning ways after a disappointing batting collapse in their last game handed victory to Australia.

Simpson hopes Vardy stays at Leicester City.

Leicester City defender Danny Simpson is hopeful that striker Jamie Vardy will reject the
overtures of Arsenal and still be at the Premier League champions when the new season kicks off.
Arsenal have triggered a release clause in Vardy's contract with a bid believed to be 20 million pounds (28.43 million) for the England striker, with the player yet to commit to the move, according to British media.
"I have spoken to Jamie," Simpson told the BBC. "Everyone wants him to stay. We would like everyone to stay, even if it's just for one more year.
"It's his decision and he says he wants to concentrate on the European Championship."
Vardy, 29, was the joint second-highest scorer in the Premier League last season with 24 goals and is currently on international duty at the Euro 2016 tournament in France.
The Leicester striker was an unused substitute when England drew their Group B opener against Russia 1-1 on Saturday but will be hoping to play some part against Wales on Thursday or the team's final group game against Slovakia on June 20.
